“I hate my life!” Jonathon complained. “Everyone makes fun of me at school! Mom, you just don’t understand how hard it is to be gay! Everyone is against me. My best friend won’t talk to me or have anything to do with me. It’s like he thinks everyone will think he is gay by just being my friend.”
Brenda was scared for her sixteen year old son. He had just started his junior year at high school and now with his confession of being gay, it was pushing him into a dark depression that she didn’t know how to handle. She thought about going to her priest and asking him for guidance, but she knew it wouldn’t help. The church excommunicated homosexuals and condemned them to hell. What was she going to do? She had to help her son! “Please God don’t turn your back on my son, just because he is gay!” She pleaded.
“My life isn’t worth living!” Jonathon screamed. “I hate my life! I wish I were dead.” The overwhelming hopelessness made him begin secretly planning how to kill himself. He believed that everyone was against him and that Suicide was his only hope to stop the persecution he was facing for being gay.
Brenda had always been a true believer in God. She attended church every Sunday. But now how could she continue to attend her church if they were telling her that God hates homosexuals? “Please God; I need answers to how to love my son even when my church says he is bad!”
Many parents and friends of gay and lesbian teenagers are confused over why many churches believe homosexuals are hated by God. Isn’t God love? Why would God stop loving their child if they were gay? They are afraid to talk to clergy to find out why because even talking about the gay issue is considered evil. Even with the recent acceptance of gay marriage in many states, most churches do not support it. They insist their church members must vote against politicians who accept the homosexual lifestyle. They continue to enforce through their congregations a church policy that tells their members to ‘love the sinner but hate the sin’. This kind of policy is very destructive to families because it doesn’t allow any kind of biblical education on homosexuality.
World news stated that over ninety percent of Americans believe in God, but less than half attend church. Why are people walking away from churches? Many complain that the old policies of hate are killing the traditional churches and forcing members to leave. It has everything to do with ministers enforcing the Laws of Moses which are thought to hold the keys to morality. Is this the way God wants His church to be? Does God hate people because they have no ability to follow the rules as stipulated in the Bible?
Galatians 5: 16&17: “What I say is this: let the Sprit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature. For what our human nature wants is opposed to what the Spirit wants, and what the Sprit wants is opposed to what our human nature wants. These two are enemies, and this means that you cannot do what you want to do.” (The Good News Study Bible)
When Jesus came He brought a new teaching to the Church. It was a teaching that would free the people from the Laws and rules they were forced to follow in the Old Testament. The laws purpose was to instruct people on the right way to follow God, but when Jesus came everything changed. He introduced the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave people the freedom to listen to God in their heart and know His will for their lives.
Galatians 5:18: “If the Spirit leads you, then you are not subject to the Law.” (The Good News Study Bible)
This kind of teaching was very alarming to the church during Jesus’ time. When no rules are followed and people are given the ability to make right decisions according to the Holy Spirit, then the powers of the rules are now null and void. If the church could not control the people then the present church would fail, because no one would need the church to tell them how to follow God.
This is the reason Jesus was crucified by the Jews. They didn’t want the freedom that Christians experienced with the Holy Spirit in control of their lives. This is also the reason why many churches today hold onto what they believe is sin. Paul calls the ministers that preach human doctrines of hate false teachers.
2 Peter 2: 1&2: “False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction. Even so many will follow their immoral ways; and because of what they do, others will speak evil of the Way of truth.” (The Good News Study Bible)
The way of truth is by faith in Jesus Christ as your Savoir. When we place our faith in Him, He forgives our sins. He also frees us from untrue doctrines that men made churches make up to force people to follow them.
Colossians 2:9: “For the full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity.” (The Good News Study Bible)
Jesus loved people. He did not limit his love to the traditions as recorded in the laws found in the Old Testament. He loved all people unconditionally.
1 John 4: 19-21: “We love because God first loved us. If someone says he loves God, but hates his brother, he is a liar. For he cannot love God, whom he has not seen, if he does not love his brother, whom he has seen. The command that Christ has given us is this whoever loves God must love his brother.” (God is love. If we hate homosexual lifestyle we are not following God.)
Brenda and Jonathon were confused over how to handle what their church was telling them about homosexuality. There churches policy of “love the sinner but hate the sin’ was impossible to follow. Brenda could not hate Jonathon for who God made him to be. She loved her son unconditionally.
They read a book titled I Want to Know my Future together. The book clearly defined through a true life story that God made homosexuals too. Now that Jonathon was educated about homosexuality he began to accept his life. He no longer wanted to commit suicide.
Brenda changed too. She was so shocked over how her church handled homosexuality that she chose a new church. Now she was attending a church that was open and affirming to all people from all different lifestyles. She became a member of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). She began to love people unconditionally believing that God did not call her to judge but to love.
